The usefulness of online forums in fighting depression

The importance of a support system

As we have mentioned time and again in previous posts, support from friends and family can make a huge difference to someone dealing with depression. However, not everyone is blessed with having a strong support system. This could even be a reason for succumbing to the illness in the first place. In addition, some people are more introverted than others and naturally prefer to be alone.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that man is a social animal. The company and the understanding of others, even if it’s just one other person, is comforting to most people. Without that company, the depressive disorder becomes almost inevitable as you isolate yourself further and further from society.

Online web forums

This is why online web forums are GREAT resource tools for people trying to fight or overcome your feelings of being depressed. You can seek out help for your clinical depression and vent out your feelings and frustrations there anonymously and know that the people there actually understand your feelings of pain, anger, sadness or even nothingness. You don’t have to worry about people judging you on such forums.

Listed at the end of this post are a few great online forums you can register and participate in anonymously for free. You can even just lurk around on the forums instead of actively participating if that’s your wish. Sometimes knowing that there are people sharing your pain can be enough!

Getting the most out of the forums

Instead of just posting your own stories on depression, try helping and providing encouragement/support to others posting on the forums. This gets you to focus away from your own pain and onto the road to helping others.

Do try to post something, anything, even a simple “Hello”, instead of just passively reading the forum posts. Active participation gets your mind working more and can ignite your much-needed motivation to try and get out of depression.

The list – A very active and supportive community, including sections discussing suicide and depression treatments – Not as active as the above, but still a very supportive community with a diverse range of topics on depression, including a useful section on healthy living – A large range of sections to do with depression, and even includes a chat system – A chat system to talk about depression, and especially bipolar depression. The following from the site says it all: “We take a humorous self help approach to dealing with our problems. Join us and break out of your shell of isolation and loneliness. A large dose of silliness can help cure what ails us. We try to offer a less depressing type of chat experience.”
